A drunk Canadian man swam across the Detroit River to the United States, which led to an international rescue operation. John Morillo, 47, of Windsor, Ontario, told The Windsor Star on Tuesday. “The thing is, I’ve been telling people I’m going to swim across the river for years and they’re like ‘yah, yah, blah, blah, you can’t make it.’ So, I don’t know, last night I just decided it was the time to go.”

Morillo regretted causing the international incident, which included a response by U.S. and Canadian authorities who were on the scene in the form of three boats and a helicopter. He was arrested for public intoxication but was later released from jail.

Eventually, Morillo made it across the river’s rough waters to Detroit, where he pulled himself out near downtown’s Renaissance Center. You would think he would have taken a boat back across to Windsor, Ontario, but instead he decided to swim back when he was spotted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The night of swimming will prove to be expensive for Morillo who will receive a fine of $5,000 to $25,000.
