According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the use of heroin rose 75% from 2007-2011 according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The authorities have also noticed and are cracking down on the abuse. Over the past five years, seizures of heroin in the United States by the Drug Enforcement Administration have gone up more than 50 per cent, from 1,334 lbs in 2008 to 2,059 lbs in 2012.
Public health experts say that there is a definite connection between heroin abuse and prescription drugs who act as beginning or gateway drugs.
According to recent survey by DrugFree.org, the prescription drug abuse starts very early with one in four high school students have abused prescription pain medications like Vicodin and Oxycontin, up 33 per cent in just five years.
The numbers continue to shock. According to a 2011 White House report, 257 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers – derived from the opium poppy, like heroin – were distributed nationwide in 2009.
The Center for Disease Control reports that the medical use of opioid painkillers has increased ten times as compared to what it was 20 years ago.
