5 Steps to Setting Up Your Future This Weekend
The greatest gift you gain through recovery is the chance to regain control of your life and your future starting with today. While we may not be able to erase the things in our past, we have the power to create our future in ways that no one else can. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by thoughts of the future. However, when you start with taking these 5 steps toward setting up your future today, the future becomes a less scary place.
STEP 1: Make Today the Day You Fully Commit to Sobriety
Give yourself over completely sobriety. No more ‘ifs’ and ‘maybes’ and seeking loopholes for getting around things. Be open to the fact that sobriety is your saving grace; allow it to touch all aspects of your life. Keep your focus. Setting up your future begins with a conscious decision to do what needs to be done to get where you want to go.
STEP 2: Tackle One Goal You Keep Putting Off
Odds are that if you have something you really want to accomplish in life, you’ve considered what it would take to reach that goal. If it’s traveling, you’ve done some research regarding costs or places you would like to visit. Want to start your own business? You’ve likely done a google search or two regarding where you should start and what you would need to know.
The thing is, just having that knowledge or even a plan isn’t enough if you never act on them. Do yourself a favor: this weekend, complete at least one of the tasks that will bring you closer to your ultimate goal. Losing weight? Join a gym or create an at home exercise regimen. Want to learn to play an instrument? Find some tutorials and get practicing. You can’t expect to gain things you aren’t willing to work for.
STEP 3: Invest- in Yourself
You pour your time and money into other people’s dreams and aspirations all the time: when you go to work, when you make purchases, etc. Why, then, is returning that investment into yourself so hard? No, we’re not just talking about saving money (which you should be): invest in yourself by taking care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Don’t be afraid to take a mental health day or tell someone no if it’s for your own sake. Make it a habit: you’re important here, too.
STEP 4: Educate Yourself
The world is constantly changing- and us right along with it. Expanding your mental horizon by learning new things helps to keep your mind busy and cravings at bay. While you don’t have to dive into the political nastiness and ugly things in the world, taking the time this weekend to learn about a topic that interests is important to setting up your future success. The more you know and the more you learn, the more you have to offer. You never know- a trip the library or watching a few educational YouTube videos could lead you on a fulfilling life journey.
STEP 5: Don’t Stop When Monday Comes
Setting up your future doesn’t end when the weekend is over. That’s like going to the gym a few times then eating a bunch of junk, still expecting to see results. Set short-term and long-term goals and work consistently toward them. Every day is an opportunity to get that much closer to the life you’ve dreamed of. Keep your eyes on the prize and always move forward.
