Robert Downey Jr. Opens Up About Indio Downey’s Recovery
Robert Downey Jr. is one proud papa and took to Facebook to let the world know with a loving, and proud post and shout out to his Indio Downey and his band, The Dose.
Downey’s oldest son, Indio Downey, has maintained a mostly private life outside of the spotlight of his famous father. That all changed for the 22 year old when, on June 29th, he was pulled over and found in possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia. His arrest thrust the young musician into the glare of public criticism and harassment from the paparazzi. Thankfully, Robert and his loving wife, Susan, were able to step in and intervene, offering support and love during a trying and vulnerable point in his life. They were able to get Indio the help he needed, sending him to rehab while fielding the prying eyes of the public.
Downey himself has quite a past where it comes to substance abuse and public ridicule, including a few arrests of his own. He has maintained his sobriety since 2001 with the help of his wife and the love and support of his friends, family, and fans.
However, as any parent with a history of substance abuse can attest, there’s always a gnawing sense of fear that your child will follow you down that dark and dangerous path; when that fear is realized, it often comes coupled with guilt and misplaced blame. Robert Downey, Jr. was no exception. When news of Indio’s brush with the law and his apparent drug use came to light, Downey turned the blame on his own history, as well as that of his ex-wife and Indio’s mother, Deborah Falconer:
“He’s his mother’s son and my son, and he’s come up the chasm much quicker than we did. But that’s typical in the Information Age; thing’s get accelerated. You’re confronted with histories and predispositions and influences and feelings and unspoken traumas or needs that weren’t met, and all of a sudden you’re three miles into the woods. Can you help someone get out of those woods? Yes, you can. By not getting lost looking for them. Pick a dysfunction and it’s a family problem.”
Indio Downey, Your Dad Rocks!
I truly commend Downey for coming forward to help Indio Downey through such a difficult situation, especially one which has played out so publicly. While he speaks frankly and is correct that there is a fair bit of predisposition at work here, I can’t help but feel like he’s shouldering quite a bit of guilt and responsibility when it comes to Indio Downey’s foray into substance abuse. While his own experience in rehab taught him not to interfere with Indio’s treatment, you can just tell by the way he talks about his son and his recovery that he genuinely wants what’s best for him and to right whatever wrongs he may have done in the past.
Thankfully for this proud father and his resilient son, Indio’s recovery is going well; the 22 year old was even cleared of charges in a recent court appearance, only a few months after his father’s 1996 drug convictions were pardoned.
In celebration of his son’s slow but steady journey to sobriety, Downey posted a heartfelt message on his Facebook page, in which he congratulated his firstborn son, calling him inspiring and amazing. Included in his post was a link to The Dose, Indio’s band, as well as their music video, to be viewed by all of Downey’s Facebook fans- more than 27 million people, including me.
