By taking the time to address the mental, physical, emotional, and interpersonal aspects of addiction we help our clients transform their lives from the inside out.

What Is Alcohol Dependence?

Recognizing the difference between typical alcohol use and alcoholism can be tricky, especially because drinking is so widely accepted in our society. Because alcohol use is so ingrained into our celebrations and daily lives the signs of a problem may go unnoticed.

What’s the difference between normal alcohol use and alcohol dependence? Alcoholism typically begins with social drinking at parties or with friends, but eventually graduates to impacting everything you do. You may feel reliant on alcohol to relax, cope with difficult emotions, or just get through the day. Frequently experiencing hangovers or needing to drink more and more in order to get the same effect are common signs that drinking has become a problem. Other signs include:

Alcohol Dependence

Some forms of alcohol addiction are more subtle than others. Often called ‘functional alcoholism’, this form of alcohol dependence may not have the typical hallmarks of an alcohol use disorder. As the name suggests, functional alcoholism may not interfere in day to day life in an overtly obvious way. People experiencing functional alcoholism may be able to maintain a job or keep up with household obligations but still experience problematic drinking habits.

Some signs of functional alcoholism include:

Long-Term Effects of Alcohol Dependence and Addiction

Long-term alcohol dependence wreaks havoc on the body, causing serious damage if it’s left unaddressed. Alcoholism can be especially difficult on your  kidneys and liver, the organs responsible for filtering toxins from your system. Some of the health symptoms that may arise from alcohol addiction include:

In extreme cases, chronic alcohol abuse can cause organ failure, coma, or death.

While these health effects may take months or years to form, the more immediate health risks associated with heavy drinking comes from alcohol poisoning. This common and dangerous form of overdose can cause arrhythmia, hypothermia, seizures, excessive vomiting, and cognitive and coordination issues.

Delirium Tremens and the Dangers of Alcohol Withdrawal

Even if you recognize the risks and dangers of alcohol abuse, quitting drinking isn’t a simple task. Despite common misconceptions, quitting cold turkey can be incredibly dangerous. This is because improperly detoxing from alcohol is one of the most dangerous forms of withdrawal. The symptoms can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening without the right medical intervention and support. This is especially true for long-term heavy drinkers or those who develop health conditions as a result of their drinking habits.

Delirium Tremens

Delirium Tremens, of DT, is a potentially life-threatening condition that can occur during alcohol withdrawal. As the name suggests, this condition may result in hallucinations or delirium. While these symptoms may be a sign of a serious problem, the more dangerous symptoms include:

Complications of delirium tremens can include sepsis, coma, and organ failure. Early symptoms of delirium tremens feel similar to other symptoms of alcohol withdrawal and may therefore be overlooked or ignored until it’s too late. This is why it’s vital not to attempt to detox from alcohol on your own and seek help from a licensed and accredited alcohol detox center. These signs include:

What Should You Expect in an Alcohol Rehab Center?

Alcohol rehab programs are designed to help break the cycle of alcohol abuse by addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction. Beyond medically supervised detox, which is vital for people recovering from alcohol dependence, mental and behavioral health services are important for lasting sobriety. Because alcohol and substance abuse is so often rooted in underlying trauma or mental health conditions, failing to work through these factors of addiction may leave you vulnerable to relapse.
