Morphine affects regions of the brain which mediate what we perceive as pleasure, which causes initial feelings of euphoria. Although the euphoric effects may be pleasurable initially, the short and long term effects of morphine use can be serious and in some cases fatal. Short term side effects of morphine use will vary based upon how the drug was administered and the amount taken. With prolonged morphine use the side effects become more adverse and negative. The long term effects of morphine abuse can cause damage to the veins at the site of injection and mood disorders such as depression.
