Brad Pitt Opens Up About Marijana, Alcohol Addiction
In a surprisingly intimate and personal interview for GQ, Hollywood leading man Brad Pitt opens up about his struggles with marijuana and alcohol abuse and life after Angelina.
The award winning actor has garnered quite a bit of negative attention recently due to divorce drama and rumors, but he has taken it all in stride, focusing on his children and moving forward with his career and humanitarian efforts. His relative silence about the recent changes in his life has left fans curious and yearning to hear from him- so he opened up to GQ. What he revealed may surprise you.
During his interview with Michael Paterniti, Pitt admits to his faults in his split from Angelina Jolie, whom he has been with for 11 years and married in 2014. While details remain unclear, many speculate an alleged altercation with his 15 year old son Maddox as the catalyst for Jolie to file for divorce. Since then there have been allegations of child abuse on the part of Brad Pitt, which were investigated by the FBI.
While charges were dropped and the couple has come up with a temporary child custody arrangement, the bitter divorce proceedings continue.
Despite the turmoil of his personal life, Pitt appears to be on a Hollywood comeback, releasing a movie and a Netflix original series since this all began in September 2016. To the public he has kept a remarkably level head and remained mostly silent about the divorce, releasing only a few statements through his publicist, including a joint statement with Angelina. Reportedly his relationship with Maddox is on the mend and he and his estranged wife are once again on speaking terms, focusing on their children over their personal feelings.
But Brad has found a space for exploring that emotional baggage left behind by what has been an intense and often criticized relationship from the start. Many are still unwilling to forgive his alleged transgressions with Angelina Jolie on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, during his marriage to Jennifer Aniston. In fact, this Brad Pitt- Angelina Jolie divorce has sparked rumors of a new affair with another co-star that have been staunchly denied by all parties.
For the most part, Pitt has been living alone in his Hollywood Hills home, attempting to keep life as normal as possible for his children while he rebuilds his own.
Going to therapy has helped Pitt immensely- though he admits he went to two others before finally finding a therapist that worked for him. He said he felt as if this moment was inevitable regardless of the events of the last 6 months:
“I think it would have come knocking, no matter what…I’ve become absolutely tired of myself. And this is a big one. These moments have always been huge generators of change. And I’m quite grateful for it. But me, personally, I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or has a spliff, or something. Something. And you realize that a lot if it is, um- cigarettes, you know, pacifiers. And I’m running from feelings. I’m really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this year, you know– things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem. And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again. I think that’s part of the human challenge: You either deny them all your life or you answer them and evolve.”
Brad’s apparent alcohol abuse came at a cost:
“I enjoy wine very, very much, but I just ran it to the ground. I had to step away for a minute. And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good. [I] don’t want to live that way anymore… But the terrible thing is I tend to run things into the ground. That’s why I’ve got to make something so calamitous. I’ve got to run it off a cliff.”
He goes on to compare his recovery process to home renovation- removing all the decor and knick-knacks until you get down to the very structure, then starting again. “For me this period has really been about looking at my weaknesses and failures and owning my side of the street.”
In his pursuit to put his life back together again, Brad Pitt has delved back into his love for art in all forms, using his time to create rather than festering on the negativeness of life. With his head clear and his focus on healing and rebuilding, we can only imagine the greatness that lies ahead.
