Children of women who consume alcohol while pregnant are three times more likely to die from SIDS – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome – compared to women who do not have alcohol issues, according to a recent study conducted in Australia. This story details the importance of early detection of alcohol abuse and why those with drinking issues should seek professional help.
A new Australian study found that one in six SIDS deaths was linked to mothers who had drinking issues. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than 1 year old that can’t be explained after thoroughly investigating.”
For the new study, the Australian researchers evaluated nearly 78,000 live births from 1983 to 2005. They found nearly 22,000 of the mothers had an alcohol diagnosis such as acute alcohol intoxication or dependence. About 56,000 did not. “Maternal alcohol-use disorder is a significant risk factor for SIDS and infant mortality,” wrote researcher Colleen O’Leary, of Curtin University in Perth, and colleagues.
David P. Phillips, a professor of sociology at the University of California, San Diego, has also found that there is a connection between a parent’s alcohol consumption and SIDS deaths. As alcohol drinking increases such as on holidays and weekends, so do the number of SIDS deaths, he reported.”We know that when people are under the influence of alcohol, they perform tasks much more poorly,” he said.
