Walking Drunk Can Be As Dangerous As Driving Drunk

According to a report released by the Department of Transportation, more than one-third of the 4,432 pedestrians killed in car accidents in 2011 had alcohol in their bodies. Many of these victims had blood alcohol levels higher than the legal driving limit. It was also found that while the number of traffic fatalities has decreased since 2002, the percentage of pedestrian fatalities has grown by 3 percent in the same time period.

The numbers of pedestrians killed and their blood alcohol levels are truly shocking. More than 1,500 of the 4,432 pedestrians who lost their lives in traffic fatalities possessed blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, which, in most states, is the legal limit for driving. However, 13% of the drivers involved in crashes that killed a pedestrian had blood alcohol content levels above the legal driving limit.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said, “Whether you live in a city or a small town, and whether you drive a car, take the bus or ride a train, at some point in the day, everyone is a pedestrian. We all have a reason to support pedestrian safety.”
